Visiting a Patient at MGH

At Michael 九游体育 (MGH), we understand that family and friends play an important part in patients鈥 healing.

That鈥檚 why we welcome family and friends according to patient wishes. We want to build an environment where our staff, physicians, learners and volunteers work with patients and their families and care partners to provide the best care possible.

  • On most units, there are no set visiting hours. Please contact the healthcare team in the unit you are visiting to learn more about visiting a patient.

  • The number of people welcomed in a patient鈥檚 room at any one time is best decided in agreement with the patient and the healthcare team and, in a shared room, with the other patient(s). The size of the room, as well as infection control precautions (if applicable), may limit the number of family and friends who can be present at one time.

  • To support families, children under the age of 12 are welcome to visit when accompanied by an adult who is not the patient.

  • If you would like to bring your family pet (cat or dog) with you when you visit a patient, please arrange this with the healthcare team ahead of time.

  • Sometimes, we may need to restrict visits because of treatments or to protect the safety, privacy or rights of other patients. Please contact the healthcare team in the unit you are visiting to learn about special guidelines for that area.

  • Family and friends arriving to the hospital between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. must enter through the Stavro Emergency Department.

Please speak to the supervisor or manager of the unit you are visiting if you have questions or concerns regarding any of the above.

Infection Control measures

  • Please do not visit if you are feeling unwell, have an infection, symptoms of respiratory or flu-like illnesses, undiagnosed skin rashes, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea.
  • To help keep everyone safe, it is important that you wash your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub when you enter and leave a patient鈥檚 room.

  • Masking is optional for all patients, families and care partners. Masks are available at all hospital entrances, in the Agne & Adrian Rocca Patient Registration Department and on clinical units for those who wish to use them.

  • If you are visiting a patient with an infectious illness, you may be required to wear a special mask and/or gown while in the patient鈥檚 room. Please contact the healthcare team for more information and follow any signage posted on room doors.

GETTING TO MGH

VIDEO FAMILY VISITS

We understand that in-person visits may be difficult for some patients and their loved ones. Virtual visiting (arranged for patients using the Zoom platform on a hospital iPad) is available in all clinical areas. Learn more about our Video Family Visit Program.
