Adult Mental Health Inpatient Service

The Adult Mental Health Inpatient Service is a short-term treatment service for individuals over the age of 18 who are experiencing an acute mental health crisis requiring urgent intervention through immediate hospitalization.

The service provides assessments, treatment/intervention, and discharge planning to stabilize those experiencing:

  • Psychosis or mood disturbances related to major psychiatric illnesses, adjustment disorders, or personality disorders.
  • Substance use challenges compounded by situational challenges or mood disturbances.
  • Emotional distress triggered by situational crises.
  • Psychogeriatric care to address emotional, social, and cognitive challenges in adults 65+.

Our psychiatrist-led interprofessional team includes representation from nursing, occupational therapy, social work, medicine, and pharmacy along with collaboration from family and community supports when possible.

Individualized treatment plans are developed for each patient and may include a range of therapeutic interventions, such as psychiatric, psychosocial, and functional assessments; psychotropic medications; psychosocial groups; psychoeducation; electroconvulsive therapy (ECT); and comprehensive discharge planning.

Inpatient, outpatient, and community services are consulted as needed in order to inform treatment plans and connect patients with post-discharge supports, in order to minimize and prevent relapse.
