Preparing for Hemodialysis Treatment

Coxwell Entrance Closure

As of March 21, 2025, MGH’s main entrance on Coxwell Avenue is closed as the next phase of our redevelopment project begins. Patients and visitors can use the new temporary main entrance on Sammon Avenue between Coxwell Avenue and Knight Street. View our campus map.

Before Treatment

Bring your health card to every appointment.
Expect to be asked for your name and date of birth.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your dialysis site.
Eat before or after your treatment. A light snack is allowed for diabetic patients. Please bring your own food as food is not provided.
Arrive 30 minutes before your treatment time.
Wait in the designated seating area until you are called for treatment. Please do not enter the treatment area early.
Wear a face covering as per public health and unit protocols.
Sanitize your hands prior to entering dialysis unit.
Note that vital signs and weight will be assessed before treatment.

During Treatment

Your care team will monitor you during treatment.
Wear a face covering as advised.
Stay in your chair/bed during your treatment.
You may watch TV, listen to music or read during hemodialysis. Please note that Michael �� is not responsible for the loss of personal items or valuables.

After Treatment

Allow 30 minutes for recovery after your treatment.
Vital signs and weight will be checked after treatment.
If you had needles in your dialysis access site, you will be monitored for bleeding after needle removal.
Avoid driving if you feel tired or unwell.
