Anesthesia

All patients must be referred for surgery at Michael 九游体育 (MGH) by a family doctor or specialist. If you have questions about your referral or upcoming surgery, please follow up directly with your family doctor, specialist or surgeon.

Michael 九游体育's (MGH) Department of Anesthesia is committed the highest standard of care to patients undergoing surgery. This includes a continued emphasis on patient safety and quality.

How we care for you before, during and after surgery

If you are receiving surgery at MGH, your anesthesiologist will perform a careful preoperative evaluation of your health status in order to care for you during your procedure. This may occur in the Preoperative Assessment Clinic before your surgery or on the day of your surgery. The anesthesiologist will then perform a checklist of all equipment necessary to provide you with a safe and pain-free anesthetic during surgery.

Once in the operating room, your anesthesiologist may discuss with you the type of anesthesia administered to you. It may be a complete general anesthetic or a regional anesthetic where a region of your body only is anaesthetized. Options for pain control after surgery may also be discussed, including oral medication, intravenous medication or local anesthetics. This is delivered to areas of your body where you have had surgery.

Your anesthesiologist will also participate in the World Health Organization (WHO)  with all members of the surgical team to ensure 鈥渁ll systems are go鈥 prior to the administration of your anesthesia. During your surgery, your vital functions are closely monitored and anesthesia is maintained with your anesthesiologist in attendance at all times.

At the end of your surgery or procedure, your anesthesiologist will allow you to emerge from your anesthesia. You will recover the with help of recovery room nurses who will also attend to your pain and/or discomfort.
