#IamMGH tells the stories of our people. In honour of Black History Month, we鈥檙e centring the voices and lived experiences of our Black staff and physicians throughout February. Meet Patricia Daw, Volunteer at Michael 九游体育 (MGH).
鈥淚 have always wanted to give my time back to my community hospital. I started volunteering at Michael 九游体育 over 20 years ago and I still feel inspired. I have previously volunteered and helped at the hospital鈥檚 Foundation galas. Right now I am supporting the MGH information desk by directing visitors and answering their questions.
The most rewarding part of my job is to help visitors navigate their way around the hospital. This can include escorting an elderly visitor to their outpatient appointment or calling a taxi for a family so they reach home safely. I have also had challenging days where I have been met with visitors who may be feeling upset or frustrated. In those moments, I offer a smile and try to help where I can so everyone is met with kindness and enthusiasm.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been so many changes to volunteer opportunities in our communities. I am proud to work with our MGH volunteer team and volunteer management team who keep us updated about current situations, changing hospital policies and new opportunities.
I have the chance to connect with people from different walks of life and help in small ways. As a volunteer, we don鈥檛 get paid, but I do it because I love it and want to help without expecting anything in return.鈥�
